Dear Colleagues/Pianists,
Dear Competitors,

we greet you again from Pilsen, the city where Bedřich Smetana lived, studied and composed his first works. Certainly, we shall all agree that the works of Bedřich Smetana should be included in the repertoire of all Czech pianists.

When Smetana is played, the very essence of Czech music is touched. The music of Bedřich Smetana may, for a non-Czech pianist, offer an interesting and inspiring ingredient to a romantic piano repertoire.

For all of you - Czech and foreign pianists alike - we have prepared competition conditions that will respect your artistic freedom when selecting your repertoire to a considerable degree. We purposely left the decision up to you, whether you prepare a Smetana programme with a focus on virtuoso, lyrical or dance features.

What else can the Smetana Competition offer?

An almost unlimited opportunity to practise during the course of the competition; the entire conservatory building with many pianos will again be at your disposal. According to your wishes you can choose your accommodation from boarding houses and hotels in the centre of the city or cheaper options in university students' halls of residence. You will have an experienced team of organisers, including conservatory teachers.

And last but not least, a sensitively selected jury. Representatives from both our most prestigious universities - the Prague and Brno Academies - will appear in the jury together with pedagogues from Czech conservatoires. The jury will also include the presence of several foreign members.

The focal point and the aim of the competition is the interpretation of Smetana's piano works. They are beautiful and inspiring. If you choose and dedicate a few months to studying some of them, I am sure that you will be enriched by their depth and the power of their expression.

Vážení kolegové klavíristé,
vážení soutěžící,

oslovujeme Vás opět z Plzně, z města, kde Bedřich Smetana žil, studoval a komponoval svoje první skladby. Pravděpodobně se shodneme na tom, že dílo Bedřicha Smetany by mělo tvořit součást repertoáru každého českého klavíristy. Hrajeme-li Smetanu, dotýkáme se nejryzejší podstaty české hudby.

Pro zahraničního klavíristu může Bedřich Smetana tvořit zajímavou a inspirující součást romantického klavírního repertoáru.

Pro Vás všechny, klavíristy české i zahraniční, jsme připravili soutěžní podmínky, které výrazně respektují Vaši uměleckou svobodu při volbě repertoáru. Zcela záměrně jsme ponechali na Vašem výběru, bude-li Váš smetanovský program spíše virtuózní, lyrický, nebo taneční.

Co dalšího může smetanovská soutěž nabídnout?

Téměř neomezenou možnost cvičení během soutěže, k dispozici bude opět celá budova konzervatoře s desítkami klavírů. Výběr ubytování dle Vašich požadavků v penzionech a hotelích historického centra města, nebo levněji na vysokoškolských kolejích. Zkušený tým pořadatelů z řad pedagogů konzervatoře.

V neposlední řadě pak citlivý výběr poroty. Mezi porotci se objeví zástupci obou nejprestižnějších českých vysokých škol (pražské a brněnské akademie) a pedagogové několika konzervatoří. Devítičlenná soutěžní porota bude též obohacena účastí tří zahraničních členů.

Středem a smyslem soutěže zůstává interpretace Smetanovy klavírní hudby. Je krásná a inspirující. Rozhodnete-li se věnovat několik měsíců jejímu studiu, jsem si jist, že budete obohaceni její hloubkou a silou její výpovědi.
